Science’s Answer to Why We Can’t Stop Eating Junk Food

By Luke | July 1, 2009

Do you feel unusually happy when eating chocolate? Does having a great french fry make you want more? According to Professor David Kessler of the University of California, that’s no accident. From the Telegraph:

“The right combination of tastes triggers a greater number of neurons, getting them to fire more,” he said. “The message to eat becomes stronger, motivating the eater to look for even more food.

“Many of us have what’s called a ‘bliss point’ – the point at which we get the greatest pleasure from sugar, fat or salt.

“As more sugar [and fat or salt] is added, food becomes more pleasurable until we reach the bliss point, after which it becomes too sweet and the pleasure drops off.”

Kessler headed up the Food & Drug Administration for most of the 1990s. In a counter-intuitive yet eerily believable argument, he says these foods are geared not to quench appetites, but to stimulate them.

Click here for the full Telegraph article. There is no solution to busting the bliss point mentioned by Kessler. It’s safe to say the best way to stop eating junk food is to never start. Just one fry, piece of chocolate or potato chip can lead you down a slippery slope.

Eating healthy away from home is a challenge for just about all of us. Click here for more information on Sherman’s Health “Eating Right” course, which will help you stay healthy even when you’re eating out.
