Everything about the new Sherman Hospital is designed with the patient in mind.
The hospital is bright, open, and airy, contributing to a comforting, healing environment. Read more about the various features of the hospital below.
All Private Patient Rooms
Many patient rooms are designed with large windows overlooking the 15-acre geothermal lake. All 255 private patient rooms feature a private bathroom with a shower. And since we know family helps with the healing process, many of our rooms feature a sleeper sofa or chair for your loved ones to stay the night. We also provide a family lounge on each floor of the patient bed tower with free wireless internet access, along with complimentary drinks and healthy snacks. And perhaps best of all? Visitors are welcome anytime.
Geothermal Lake
It's more than just a lake. It's an energy-producing, stress-reducing geothermal lake that heats and cools the hospital, saving an estimated $1 million per year in energy costs. Many of our patient rooms feature bright, expansive, oversized windows that overlook the lake. A 1/2 mile walking path wraps around the lake for patients and visitors to enjoy the lake and prairie restoration areas. School and community groups are invited to visit the manifold building and learn how geothermal energy works.
Emergency Department
We made our ED the best place to go for emergencies. Patients might notice we have a dedicated entrance for ambulances. When patients enter the Emergency Department, they are welcomed by a greeter and assigned to a treatment room. Here, patients register via a computer at their bedside, significantly reducing wait time for evaluation and increasing the number of patients who can be treated.
Smart Design
The new hospital was designed for increased space and efficiency. Patient rooms are all set up identically, so nurses and staff can locate everything they need immediately. To treat critical patients quickly, our Emergency Department is immediately adjacent to our critical care units, surgery, and cardiac cauterization suites. We also feature separate elevators and corridors throughout the hospital for patients, visitors, and employees. Hallways are open and easy to navigate because equipment is moved through dedicated interior corridors.
Birthing Center
The new birthing center is the ideal place to deliver your baby. We thought of every comfort to make it a smooth process for you and your loved ones. All rooms are private, and visiting hours have been enhanced, with sleep accommodations for the immediate family. Also, we have a large family waiting area with complimentary snacks. And should you need the Special Care Nursery, we have a separate waiting room for those patients. We also have a lactation consultant on unit, and of course our continued partnership with Children's Memorial Hospital.
Cafeteria
Patients are not only be able to decide what they want to eat, but also when they want to eat, and can order off a restaurant-style menu at any time the cafeteria is open. Guests eat at our new food court-style restaurant, which means more choices, cooked-to-order in a bright, airy atmosphere. You can even dine al fresco on our outdoor patio overlooking the lake.
Atrium
The Tree of Life that frames the new entry atrium exemplifies our goal to bring the natural world into the new facility. It rises from the atrium floor, leaving the perimeter column-free. A ceiling of tensile fabric panels stretches across the upper branches to provide a curving funnel-shaped surface for indirect lighting and acoustic dispersion. The gift shop, located just off the atrium, is 2,500 square feet, and houses the Auxiliary's Sherman Perk, the coffee shop, which has new offerings like sandwiches. There is also a "grab and go" window for coffee and snacks on-the-go right by the entrance to the hospital.
Heart and Vascular Center
Patients have easier access to cardiac services. Our Heart and Vascular Center allows for outpatient care for some services. Also, surgery and cardiac cauterization suites are located immediately adjacent to the Emergency Department for quick transfers. And of course, our experienced team of doctors nurses and staff moved to the new hospital with us, so you continue to benefit from our experience with more than 12,000 Open Heart cases and over 50,000 Cath Procedures.
Cancer Center
Our new Cancer Care Center is located in a separate building next to the hospital for the privacy of our patients. This also provides easy access to comprehensive care, including radiation therapy.
